Presenters: Sam Gibson and Liz Nicholson

Liz and Sam will give a live webinar on soil: the best practice in approaching a garden project from the aspect of the soil; from soil survey to influencing the design and structuring the implementation.

We can then finish with examples of where things don't go according to plan and how to remediate the soil on those sites, acknowledging that its best for the designer to be involved from the outset, to avoid issues down the line.

Working for Nicholsons, Sam Gibson, who is an operations manager for garden and landscape projects, will draw on their experiences and present examples to illustrate the topic.

Liz trained in soil science and agricultural botany before pursuing a career in commercial field vegetable production. Working on many different soil types across the UK and Europe gave Liz a broad understanding of how tillage and soil movements can often compromise soil structure. Since moving into garden design in 1999, Liz has applied these core principles in her work, prioritising the soil in every project. As a chartered environmentalist, Liz has helped develop the tool elemental to support all designers and navigate the journey from design through to build ensuring best outcomes for climate and nature. As a council member of the RHS, Liz is a passionate horticulturalist and recognises that it is imperative to have good soils to enable plants to thrive.
