Garden Organic is the leading national charity for organic growing – with 20,000 members and 500 volunteers, we have reached over 3 million people with our work. We are dedicated to organic growing, composting, rare seed conservation, citizen science and research – with the overarching aim of supporting biodiversity. We champion organic gardening in workplaces and communities through projects, training, and events throughout the UK.

Session leader

Nicola Hope is a consultant organic horticulturalist, planting focussed garden designer, writer and speaker. She holds the prestigious title of RHS Master of Horticulture and is based in Malmesbury, in the Cotswolds. Nicola has been a professional organic gardener for a long and extremely happy time and has worked alongside inspiring gardeners in special gardens including Highgrove, Lake House, The Abbey House and Cole Park.

This workshop will provide the following outcomes for participants

  • Feel inspired and more confident to get composting
  • Be able to apply effective composting processes
  • Confident enthusing and supporting others to compost

You will receive a certificate on completion of the course.

We anticipate that most participants will have prior horticultural experience; therefore, we will provide the knowledge & support to encourage effective composting in a range of settings, and ways to encourage clients to adopt composting. The session will include a combination of classroom based and practical learning activities utilising our on-site training garden and compost facilities.

We will cover the following topics

  • The environmental and social benefits of composting
  • The components of successful composting & which materials to compost
  • The different types of compost bins & methods
  • The importance and function of biological life within the compost bin
  • Engaging others in the compost process including troubleshooting and FAQs

Feedback from participants on previous training

It’s rare to leave a course feeling inspired, excited and having learned so much that you want to get to work straight away! Horticulture Practitioner

I had a thoroughly good time and feel I know so much more about the ins and outs of 'compost' and feel inspired to go and try it all out! Composting workshop attendee
