PROTECTING YOURSELF AS GARDEN DESIGNER
Presented by: Alan Sargent FCIHort FPGCA
A presentation produced by Alan Sargent FCIHort FPGCA who is the founder of The Association of Professional Landscapers and also The Professional Garden Consultant’s Association. His career since 1968 includes designing and building hundreds of gardens, mainly in the domestic sector, including 61 RHS Show Gardens between 1984 and 2005. He was a founder member of The Chartered Institute of Horticulture in 1984, and has had a close association with The SGLD since its formation in 1981, working with all of the founding members.

Alan founded The Landscape Library, a free-to-view industry resource in 2020, and in 2025, in association with Gareth Wilson, he founded The Paving Site Online magazine to promote excellence in paving.
Since retiring from active duties, he has worked as an accredited expert witness, dealing with a wide range of Court claims, as an independent, appointed by the Court to provide accurate reports for use by the Judge. He will bring his experiences to bear on advising garden designers how to protect themselves from vexatious clients and avoiding the many pitfalls that may occur to the unwary.
Starting off with Personal Safety, he will examine a list of Red Flag situations, including Planning Permissions, Waivers, Contract Documentation and Personal Non-Disclosure Agreements, all of which may have a major impact on the well-being of a Designer.
