Find out more about the complexities of turning a space into a productive kitchen garden that your client will be delighted to use way after you’ve left them to it.

The day will cover:

  • Kitchen garden styles and their possibilities for growing vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit
  • Site suitability, optimum dimensions, maintenance implications and accessibility
  • Wade through the choice of added extras: greenhouses to compost bins and more
  • Preparing soils for the long term and making sure a compost heap works
  • Growing systems: some essential tips to add value and impress your client
  • Crop choices for a range of client briefs

This day of illustrated lectures is about design and specification rather than minute detail about growing and harvesting although questions are welcome. We will inevitably discuss things like how much room is needed for the raspberries, what to do with new kale hybrids and the need to let your client down gently when they’ve asked for a low maintenance asparagus bed.

Rosie has lectured horticulture and planting design to garden design courses for many years. She is a career horticulturist, and keen fruit and vegetable grower. She writes for Gardeners' World Magazine, has been a guest panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time and is a regular garden expert on the BBC Radio Solent’s ‘Kitchen Garden’. Rosie is a National Collections Coordinator for the conservation charity Plant Heritage.

Target audience: Anyone interested in the design and development of a kitchen garden.
