Course Tutor: John Wyer

John Wyer FSGD has more than 35 years’ professional experience and is a widely published and respected designer, lecturing on his work both in the UK and abroad. He has designed hundreds of landscapes, many of which have won awards, ranging from private gardens to large-scale development projects. Graduating with a Landscape Architecture Degree from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1983, John became a Member of the Landscape Institute in 1990 and was recognised as a Fellow of the Society of Garden Designers in 2011, having served on its’ Council from 2004-2010. John co-founded Bowles & Wyer in 1993 and continues to take a lead role in design, client liaison and the planning process. He writes a widely read monthly blog that explores his insights into the design process, ponders on the roles of landscape and maintenance, and relates his adventures with cycling and swimming ponds.

Bowles & Wyer have designed and built many roof gardens both private and corporate. During the lecture style day John will be talking through the main aspects to be considered when designing for roof spaces, sharing his extensive knowledge on physical (access, exposure, materials, plants. Drainage etc) and other constraints (permits, planning, building regulations) a short section on plants and including examples from a range of designers.

More and more apartments are being built, more roof spaces that need to be made green. Any designer who is considering designing a roof gardens needs to know what needs to be considered. Permits, planning, transporting goods to the roof, aspect, weather conditions and planting schemes that will tolerates wind and heat.
