Course Tutor: John Frater

As designers working in the horticultural tradition we are familiar with researching plants in terms of their environmental tolerances. For example, is a plant shade tolerant, does it like wet or dry conditions etc. This is usually the only sort of information provided in the horticultural literature. However, it can be much more useful to consider the natural habitats of the plants we use.

Based on work undertaken in Germany we will discuss 6 plant habitat stereotypes. We will discuss the nature of the particular habitats and how this knowledge can influence, not just which plants to use, but also how they are arranged in our designs.

Once we have covered some of the theory we will try putting it into practice by producing some sketch planting plans that we will present and discuss.

The plant habitats are:

  • Woodland
  • Woodland Edge
  • Open Ground - Wet Meadow
  • Open Ground - Steppe
  • Alpine
  • Water's Edge
