The Architect Henry Gao describes working on the iPad as ‘the untethered environment’, which perfectly encapsulates the freedom that these new technologies are offering designers. We really do no longer need to be tethered to our desks!

The iPad version of SketchUp is a wonderfully versatile tool, allowing for highly sophisticated 3D modelling technology to fit, quite literally, in one’s pocket. It’s a highly intuitive programme and, in many ways, is far easier to use than the desktop version.  Having SketchUp for iPad (combined with Procreate – the iPad’s version of Photoshop) means that the vast majority of our technical drawing, 3D modelling, rendering and presentation software is now contained in a single 250mm x 180mm device light enough to take anywhere. SketchUp for iPad produces technical drawings to an accuracy of 6 decimal places of a millimetre (obviously way beyond the requirements of our profession!)

It generates plans, elevations, very precise construction detail and perspectives all from within the same single model, along with having the capability of generating unique plant libraries. In many ways, the iPad version of SketchUp is easier to learn than the full size version, so this course is ideal for those new to SketchUp, along with designers already familiar with the programme, who would like an easy way in to iPad’s more immediate and tactile interface.
