Overview:

Walls can be either freestanding or retaining, where they act as a structural transition between levels and interruptions within established gradients. A wall can comprise of a wide variety of materials and therefore construction techniques. Both traditional (concrete foundations with small masonry units) and alternative approaches need to address the impact of impeding water flow, structural requirements, suitability for the proposed level of exposure and the design criteria. This webinar will address the fundamentals of specifying a freestanding wall, the flexibility and limitations of different approaches and the common details and problems encountered.

  • How high can a wall be?
  • Low wall and high wall construction requirements
  • Use of piers and movement joints
  • Foundations, water impediment and drainage
  • Bridging utilities
  • Building in RPZs
  • Stepped terraces
  • Copings and bonds

Types of materials:

  • traditional faced blockwork structures,
  • alternative materials and techniques: timber walls, concrete, render, rubble, earth, steel

Sample drawings of many of the details and situations discussed will be shown, but due to limitations impose by copyright drawings will not be issued as separate files.
