Overview:

This talk will explore soil from the gardener's perspective. Exploring ideas around thinking more holistically and for the long term, Sheila will share some experiences of working with soil from large and small projects both at RHS Garden Wisley and in a more domestic setting. Considering the role our soils play in an ecosystem as a whole and how the design and build stage of a garden is key in leaving a space with a positive legacy, Sheila will offer up some things to think about when planning gardens with resilience for the future.

Sheila Das studied at Kew, worked for English Heritage, and has been a garden manager at RHS Garden Wisley since 2015. Sheila is passionate about gardening in sustainable ways to support planetary and human health, is well known for a love of soil, and was instrumental in developing Wisley’s ‘planet friendly’ gardening initiative. From January 2025 Sheila will be Head of Gardens and Parks at the National Trust and will carry out a lead role for horticulture across all the National Trust gardens.
