Who can join?
If you are interested in developing your design skills, advancing your career or are passionate about garden and landscape design then we’d welcome you warmly to our community. We are delighted to support young people seeking their first role in the industry and many people come into the profession as a second or third career. We count many international designers among our members, and welcome applications from those living abroad.
Why join?
Our mission is to inspire garden and landscape design that enriches homes, places and lives. We are the only professional organisation for garden designers in the UK and welcome members at all stages of their career, from those thinking of starting a career, through to students and those already practising. We will support and nurture you to help you achieve your goals in garden and landscape design.
Where should I start?
We offer a variety of different membership types depending on where you are in your career - click the suggestions below to find out which is best for you.
Already a practising designer?
Then Pre-registered membership of the Society is the place to start.
- This category is for practising designers of all backgrounds who want to evidence and enhance their skills.
- It is also where you begin on the Pathway to Registered Membership, our accreditation process.
Pre-registered membership
Have you recently qualified as a garden or landscape designer?
If you have recently completed a garden or landscape design course of level 3 qualification (i.e. diploma) or higher then you would be eligible for our Pre-registered Graduate Route.
- Your course must have been completed within the last 12 months and must have required at least 200 guided learning hours.
- This route provides discounted Pre-registered membership for 2 years; this includes all the benefits of the membership category except the ability to undertake the accreditation process.

Are you currently studying to become a garden or landscape designer?
Then consider Student membership of the Society
- This category is for those currently studying garden or landscape design. As a Student member we can help guide your training and development and support you as you begin your new career.
- You must currently be attending, or be about to start, a garden or landscape design course of at least 200 guided learning hours (i.e. one day a week for 3 terms).

Are you thinking of becoming a designer, or interested in garden design?
Friend status is the best category for designers who are not yet ready to be pre-registered members, or those taking a break from professional garden design.
- It also suits professional horticulturists, landscapers, garden photographers, writers, and others in the industry who don’t want the professional status in garden design, but who do want to be part of our community.
- Becoming a Friend also suits those with an interest in garden design but don’t wish to practice as a designer.
