These talks will concentrate on the rules, regulations and best practices that might apply to the subject.
Often, despite there being technical guidance, a solution is not always obvious, or it can be too complex to be framed within such documents. If there is any uncertainty further clarity should be sought, by the Designer from an expert or supplier.
The summary notes or slides and recordings for each talk will be made available to attendees.
Steps and ramp ratios
Steps and ramps are included within UK building regulations, which offers guidance on the ratio of riser height to tread length. The design of ramps for access and transition through a space can be complex. The slope, length and general dimensions need to follow guidance whilst also giving consideration to drainage, safety and the impact of a ramp on the garden space. This short talk will illustrate the design restrictions and configurations of steps and ramps and suggest idealised approaches to consider when starting a design
In general, what works for disabled access can be applied to wheelbarrows.
