Part 2 - 21 & 22 May 2026
Part 3 - 04 & 05 June 2026

This course is designed for garden designers with no prior knowledge of SketchUp, as well as those with some experience who wish to develop core skills in good working practice, improving fluency and confidence in computer modelling.
You will learn to draw and model a simple rectangular garden, acquiring all the necessary skills to create the illustrated design. To achieve this, the following steps will be covered in detail:

Getting Started: Opening SketchUp for the first time and setting up a basic plan.

3D Modelling: Constructing a model from a 2D plan, with a focus on techniques that give you full control over your design.

Navigation & Workflow: From the outset, you’ll learn to use preset scenes as a best practice, ensuring smooth navigation within the 3D environment. A thorough understanding of preset scenes will also enhance your ability to present your model effectively, whether for client visualisations or technical construction detailing.

2D & 3D Integration: The course will teach you how to transition seamlessly between technical 2D drawings and 3D visualisations.

Extracting Data: You will learn how to extract detailed information from your model, including linear dimensions, surface areas, and volumes. SketchUp is capable of working to six decimal places of a millimetre, far exceeding the precision required for garden design. This course will demonstrate how SketchUp allows for a seamless workflow between technical detailing for contractors and high-quality visualisations for clients, all within the same model.

SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse: An introduction to SketchUp’s extensive in-house library of plants, furniture and surface textures. Understanding how to optimise these resources will help ensure high-quality results from the outset.

This course provides the essential skills needed to progress to Part 2 of the SketchUp Series.
