These talks will concentrate on the rules, regulations and best practices that might apply to the subject.
Often, despite there being technical guidance, a solution is not always obvious, or it can be too complex to be framed within such documents. If there is any uncertainty further clarity should be sought, by the Designer from an expert or supplier.
The summary notes or slides and recordings for each talk will be made available to attendees.
Unit & Material Dimensioning.
As designers we often give a dimension to a feature with little consideration of how that descision might be interpreted during construction. A path that is 1000mm wide, a wall that is 7500mm long might give us a satisfying geometric arrangement in plan but at the expense of how the materials have to be modified in order to conform to such dimensions. Will a contractor cut materials to reflect a drawing, or will they stretch/ contract features so that only whole units of a material are used, thereby reducing cuts and wastage and maintaining the integrity of the design.
This talk will discuss and illustrate that the starting point for the layout of a garden space should be the preferred choice of materials and that the length or width of a feature be based on a module of our selected brick, paving slab or plank. It will consider how we might refine the setting out of material and adapt the way we specify, describe and dimension when using materials of different dimensions.
